Poznań combines all the advantages of a big urban centre and a compact, manageably-sized city. It is a human-scale city – a city that boasts extensive cultural offerings, a modern public transit system, high-quality hotels and restaurants, and co-hosting various sporting events, all without being overwhelming. The city is home to 25 colleges and universities, eight of which are public, and Poznań consistently ranks among Poland’s top academic and research centres. The academic work of colleges and universities is complemented by the work of dozens of research and development institutes. Poznań is also Poland’s fifth-largest city, with a population of over 534,000. The 2020+ Development Strategy for the City of Poznań stipulates the implementation of five strategic priorities: strong metropolitan area, modern entrepreneurship, green (mobile) city, friendly neighbourhoods and social dialogue.
What type of businesses does Poznań attract?
The city is home to over 118,000 businesses, and the number of companies with foreign capital is among the highest in Poland. The majority of the capital comes from Germany, France, Japan, the UK and the USA. However, the majority of foreign capital has been invested in manufacturing, primarily the auto industry, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, commerce and the real estate market (including office, commercial, hotel and residential real estate). The city considers the following sectors of the economy to be the most important: Advanced Manufacturing Technology, Business Process Outsourcing (BPO), Shared Services Centres (SSC), Research and Development (R&D), conventions and exhibitions, as well as leisure and entertainment infrastructure. Among the business services companies with centres located in Poznań are GSK Services, MAN Accounting Centre, Roche Global IT Solutions Centre, Sii and many others. At approximately 2.1 per cent, Poznań’s unemployment rate is among the lowest in the nation.
Transport links
As the capital of Greater Poland, Poznań is an important transportation hub. The city is located halfway between Warsaw and Berlin. The two capital cities can be accessed by the A2 motorway, and other cities in Poland – via the S11 and S5 expressways. The Poznań-Ławica international airport is located within city limits, about a 15-minute drive from downtown Poznań.
